Dolce & Gabbana Break The Mould With Their SS15 Show At Milan Fashion Week
Country hopping from Italy to Spain saw matadors and flamenco dancers influence D&G's latest collection
Never ones to stray from their signature style, Italian powerhouse Dolce & Gabbana didn’t need to follow the trends to make an impact at Milan Fashion Week. While the rest of the brands were channelling minimalism and the free spirit of the 1970s, Dolce & Gabbana were firmly in their heartland, showcasing a new side to Italian history in their SS15 collection.
Taking inspiration from the Spanish invasion of Sicily in the 15th Century, where the country was left with plenty of hispanic influences after a 200-year occupation (the history lesson is almost over), Dolce & Gabbana have drawn on the leftover baroque, bright colour, beautiful flowers and religious imagery to pepper their signature style with bullfighter jackets, flamenco gowns and even castanets, which popped up in the model’s hair.
In a world of mannish tailoring and bohemian themes, Dolce & Gabbana stood out – and after their buttoned-up AW14 collection, have brought sexy back to the masses. Look out for the jewelled hotpants, sheer midi skirts and embellished mini dresses that we’ll all be wearing come spring. Adding a touch of true Dolce & Gabbana fantasy, the models carried presentation cases containing dolls dressed to match their outfits. Fashion favourite Kendall Jenner closed the show, leading out a procession of girls in high-waisted hot pants and white shirts – undone to the waist.
One way D&G did follow the pack? Look closely and you will see that some of those shoes are flats. While they didn’t embrace the trend as fully as say Burberry, it was a fresh take on their feminine style and a move towards a more youthful look. And whatever else, Dolce & Gabbana offers a much-needed bit of escapism and whimsy in a serious world.
