How to Make a LEGO Man Cake

Stuck on ideas for your or your kid's birthday party? With this step-by-step, easy to follow guide, not only will you have a theme for a party but a fantastic cake to go with it as well! Plus, the cost of making this cake is only a fraction of what you'd have to pay for a cake made by a professional.

Ingredients

  • Approx. 2 boxes of your favorite cake mix
  • Cardboard or store-bought cake circles (five 4-inch, 3 3-inch)
  • Buttercream, piping gel, ganache or any frosting
  • Yellow fondant
  • Black edible marker

Steps

  1. Cut your cake circles. You'll want your cake to be somewhere around 6 inches (15.2 cm) in diameter. Cut out five 4-inch in diameter cake circles, and three 3-inch diameter cake circles.
  2. Stack and wrap the cut circles. In other words, group your 3 3-inch circles and wrap them, and do the same for the 4-inch circles.
  3. Spread either piping gel, buttercream or whatever kind of sticky cake filling you prefer on the foil covered circles. Then, roll out some fondant (yellow would be the best option for the head) to about 1/4 of an inch thick and cover the foil circles. Before you cover the circles, reserve one 4-inch circle and set it aside. Try to smooth it down as best as you can.
  4. Create the LEGO letters! An easy alternative is to buy alphabet cookie cutters (or fondant cutters) and cut them out, but you could also stencil them and cut them out by hand. Once you have your LEGO letters, stick them with piping gel on the 3-inch circles.
  5. Prepare your cakes.Bake two cakes in 6-inch pans. Make them about three or four inches high. Then, cut off the dome. Using a serrated knife, create rounded edges for the head.
  6. Frost the cake.Turn the cake over and place the reserved 4-inch circle on the bottom. Then, frost as normal. Flip the cake over, frost the rest, and place the other cake on top. Repeat Step 6 for the second cake. Frost the entire cake, making it as smooth as possible.
  7. Roll out yellow fondant until it's 1/4 of an inch thick, and cover the entire cake.Smooth it out with a fondant smoother.
  8. Stick your tall cake to your 4-inch fondant covered circle board using piping gel or buttercream.Remember not to put on too much! Grab your 3-inch circle board with the LEGO lettering and stick it on the top of the tall cake.
  9. Using black edible marker, draw on the face. This is the time to be extra creative!
  10. You're done!Serve and enjoy.
